Federal Circuit Affirms Marine Air Conditioner Patent Claims Invalid for Anticipation

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) upheld an International Trade Commission (ITC) decision in April 2026, finding multiple patent claims invalid based on anticipation by prior art in a marine air conditioning systems case.

The ITC proceeding, brought under Section 337 of the Tariff Act (addressing unfair acts in importation), centered on whether Citimarine and other defendants infringed patent rights through the importation of marine air conditioning products.

The CAFC affirmed the finding that multiple claims of the asserted patent were anticipated by prior art disclosures—a form of invalidity that bars patent enforceability. The court also found that remaining claims were not infringed by the accused products.

This decision reinforces the standards applied to Section 337 proceedings, where ITC administrative law judges (ALJs) generally receive substantial deference at the appellate stage. However, here the CAFC sustained the ITC’s interpretation of claim scope and prior art analysis across the board.

The ruling illustrates the ongoing stringency of patent eligibility standards in mechanical and environmental control system technologies. Marine equipment manufacturers face particular challenges in securing durable patent protection in this mature technical field, where existing solutions are well-documented in prior art.
