The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) formally launched new digital services for patent applications, management, and renewal on April 1, 2026. This milestone represents a critical phase of the IPO’s broader digital transformation initiative, “One IPO,” which will eventually consolidate patents, trademarks, and design services on a single unified platform.
According to the UK government’s official announcement, the new services are rolling out in phases. The “Manage intellectual property” service is now available, enabling users to create their own digital IP account for the first time. This account serves as the gateway to all other new digital services.
Alongside this, the “Apply for a patent” service has become accessible. The new application tool allows users to complete patent applications in any order, save drafts, and collaborate with colleagues—a significant departure from the rigid structure of traditional online filing systems. The interface prioritizes user experience with more intuitive navigation and greater flexibility.
A critical procedural change accompanies the service launch. According to the IPO blog, from April 1, 2026, UK patent applications can no longer be filed via the European Patent Office’s (EPO) Electronic Online Filing (eOLF) service. However, the existing Web Filing service and email submission methods remain available until mid-2026, providing a transition window.
For UK patent applicants, the operational implications are substantial. Migration to the new system becomes mandatory, requiring applicants to learn new workflows and digital tools. The IPO has committed to supporting this transition with comprehensive resources: updated guidance on GOV.UK, detailed service documentation, a library of demo videos, and weekly training webinars for new users.
The modernization effort reflects the IPO’s strategic objective to streamline patent prosecution and improve user experience. Digital transformation is expected to enhance efficiency for applicants—reducing time and administrative burden—while enabling the IPO to lower operational costs and allocate resources more effectively.
