Huawei Leads Wi-Fi 7 Patent Race—Commanding SEP Position Across Consumer Electronics
A 2026 patent analytics study reveals that Huawei maintains a commanding lead in Wi-Fi 7 standard-essential patents (SEPs), consolidating dominance it already holds in the Wi-Fi 6 generation. The company’s strong patent portfolio underscores its strategic long-term investment in wireless communication standards, a position with direct financial implications for device manufacturers worldwide.
The top five patent holders in Wi-Fi 7 are: (1) Huawei, (2) LG Electronics, (3) Intel (up from 4th in Wi-Fi 6), (4) Qualcomm (down from 3rd), and (5) MediaTek. These five companies collectively hold approximately 50 percent of all Wi-Fi 7 patent families, concentrating significant licensing power in a small group of innovators.
Huawei’s dominant portfolio reflects a deliberate SEP strategy spanning multiple generations of wireless standards. Because Wi-Fi 7 implementation is mandatory for compliance in smartphones, laptops, IoT devices, and consumer electronics, device manufacturers have no choice but to license Huawei’s patents. This “unavoidable licensing” position translates directly into substantial royalty revenue and negotiating leverage with implementers.
Competitive dynamics reveal important shifting patterns. Intel’s rise from 4th to 3rd place suggests successful R&D investment and stronger design contributions to Wi-Fi 7 specifications. Conversely, Qualcomm’s decline indicates that its wireless communication patent strategy—particularly in 5G modem design—has not translated as effectively into Wi-Fi 7 dominance, a notable strategic shift in the semiconductor landscape.
A striking development is Xiaomi’s rapid ascent from 28th place in Wi-Fi 6 to 13th in Wi-Fi 7. This jump signals accelerated patent investment by Chinese companies in smart home and IoT markets, reflecting broader geopolitical shifts in technology standards.
Huawei’s patent licensing revenue underscores the financial stakes of this market. The company reported patent licensing revenue of $630 million in 2024, with over 1.2 billion consumer electronic devices operating under Huawei Wi-Fi-related patents. This licensing income funds critical R&D operations and competitive positioning.
The Wi-Fi 7 SEP licensing landscape is also evolving structurally. In January 2026, Sisvel launched a unified “Wi-Fi Multimode” licensing pool covering both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7. This pool covers multiple patent holders and sets Wi-Fi 7 compliance royalties at $0.60 per device. However, the pool covers only approximately one-fifth of the total Wi-Fi 7 patent landscape, meaning device manufacturers must negotiate separately with additional licensors—a transparency gap that remains a persistent friction point in SEP markets.
