Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced on April 10, 2026 the recipients of the FY2026 Intellectual Property Achievement Awards (知財功労賞). The annual awards recognize individuals and organizations that have contributed to the development and promotion of Japan’s IP system or have made effective strategic use of intellectual property. This year’s cohort of 31 honorees spans major manufacturers, regional small and medium enterprises, startups, a national university, and local governments — reflecting the breadth of Japan’s evolving IP ecosystem. The award ceremony is scheduled for April 17, 2026 (Friday) at 14:00 at the Akasaka Intercity Conference in Tokyo. The full announcement is available on the METI website.
The awards are structured in four tiers. The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award covered nine honorees: two individuals and seven companies or organizations. The Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) Award went to 18 honorees: four individuals and 14 companies. The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award recognized one local government, and the Director General of the Export and International Affairs Bureau Award went to two organizations. The agriculture-related tiers were added in FY2025, extending the scope of recognition to include entities leveraging IP in the food and agricultural sectors.
Among the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award recipients, Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Osaka) received the Design Management Enterprise distinction — a category tied to the government’s “Design Management Declaration” initiative, which since 2018 has encouraged Japanese companies to integrate design and IP at the core of corporate strategy. Two individual contributors were also recognized: Yuji Toda (Director, Toda Intellectual Property Consulting Office) and Rie Yamada (President and CEO, Tohoku Electronics Industries Co., Ltd.). In the patent utilization category, Takenaka Corporation (Osaka), Toray Industries (Tokyo), and Hokkaido University received Minister-level citations. Asano Twisted Thread Co., Ltd. (Gifu) was recognized for trademark utilization, while CardioIntelligence Inc. (Tokyo) and medicaroid corporation (Hyogo) received Venture Enterprise designations.
At the JPO Commissioner Award level, Toyota Motor Corporation (Aichi) stands out as the recipient of the Design Utilization distinction. That Japan’s largest automaker is being cited specifically for design IP — rather than its vast patent portfolio — signals the strategic importance the company places on protecting the visual identity of its vehicles in an era of accelerating electrification and CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric) transformation. Also recognized in design utilization was Yamazaki Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Nara), a household goods manufacturer whose product design has become a competitive differentiator in both domestic and international markets.
In the patent utilization category under the JPO Commissioner Award, eight companies were recognized: Athlete FA Co., Ltd. (Nagano), Amano Enzyme Inc. (Aichi), Ushio Inc. (Tokyo), JFE Steel Corporation (Tokyo), Daifuku Co., Ltd. (Osaka), Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (Ishikawa), Nitto Construction Co., Ltd. (Hokkaido), and Mizkan Holdings Co., Ltd. (Aichi). The trademark utilization category included the Aomori Prefecture Black Garlic Cooperative Association (Aomori) and Mishima Foods Co., Ltd. (Hiroshima). The venture category went to Kenrobotech Co., Ltd. (Kagawa), while Kurita Water Industries Ltd. (Tokyo) received the Open Innovation Promotion designation — reflecting the growing emphasis on IP-sharing frameworks with external partners including universities and startups.
For the new agricultural IP tiers, Yamagata Prefecture received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award for its regional IP utilization, while Sakata Seed Corporation (Kanagawa) and Ehime Prefecture were recognized under the Director General of the Export and International Affairs Bureau Award. Sakata Seed, a major developer of vegetable and flower varieties, is well-known for deploying Plant Variety Protection (PVP) rights to support international market expansion — exemplifying how agricultural IP can serve as a direct enabler of export growth.
Taken together, this year’s cohort reflects Japan’s shift from a patent-centric view of IP toward a multi-dimensional approach encompassing patents, trademarks, design rights, and plant variety protection. The inclusion of medical device startups (CardioIntelligence and medicaroid) in the top ministerial tier suggests that the government is keen to highlight IP-driven healthcare innovation as a national priority. The full profiles of all recipients are available on the Japan Patent Office website.
